A broken trunk rises from dark sand, its grain worn into long folds and ridges. Warm light catches one side of the wood; beyond it, the sea and a low bank of cloud settle into bands of blue-grey. Small stones dot the otherwise empty beach.
What interests me here is the shape the water leaves behind. The wood has almost the posture of someone leaning into the wind. Against that upright form, the beach, sea and clouds stay low and level. There is enough going on in the grain to hold the picture; the horizon can be quiet.
