Medium & process
Released as limited-edition giclée prints on Hahnemühle archival paper, museum and gallery quality, signed, numbered, and sent with a certificate of authenticity.
Claire Bergstrom Jones moved from the Bay Area to Incline Village in 2017. She skis Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak, swims off the Incline beaches through the summer, and golfs at Martis Camp and Schaeffer's Mill. Her series Frozen Motion looks down on swimmers in the cold, clear water and out at skiers mid-turn, keeping the figure sharp while the water or snow around it stays loose, the way it reads when you're moving.
Artist statement
Most of my work is of swimmers in Lake Tahoe and skiers at Mt. Rose and Diamond Peak. I moved to Incline Village from the Bay Area in 2017 after years of driving up on weekends, and once I was here full time I started swimming in the lake in the summers, which I hadn't really done before. The water is very cold and very clear and I got interested in how it looks from above when someone is in it, with the light coming through and the color changing from almost turquoise near the shore to very dark blue further out. The ski images came later. I noticed that the spray off a ski in fresh snow looked a lot like the splash when someone dives in, and I started working on both at the same time. In both I tend to keep the person fairly detailed and leave the water or snow around them looser, because that is how it actually looks when you are moving: the body is what you can see clearly and everything else is a blur. I don't have a lot to say about what it means. I like being outside here in both seasons and the work comes from that.
